It was Easter Sunday in 1911. Frank did not find the service that interesting. I spent the better part of the day making a batch of springerles for the upcoming garden conference that will be at the Renaissance Center. I have hand cut about 150 cookies flavored with orange/fennel, lemon/thyme, and vanilla/lavender combinations. They must now sit out to dry for 24 hours before baking. Then they need to cure for several weeks for the spices and herbs to blossom in flavor. The recipe dates from the 1600s.

Frank met with a candidate for market gardening. I had lunch with Alex Phillips and Dan Gordon to talk about teaching options for the honors college.

Frank had rain, but today we have a true spring sunny, breezy day. I handed back assignments to my students in writing today and met with a few students about their research proposals. Our personnel committee has been able to agree on our latest business via email. The crunch of the semester’s end is upon us. Tonight I have a stack of work to grade.

Frank enjoyed fine weather and a visit from a Howard White. We had rain most of the day. I worked further on studio grades with Professor McGirr in the afternoon.

It was a fine spring day for Frank. He met with Manning. I really wish I were able to be with my family in England, but that just is not possible at this time of the year. So I am missing both the wedding of my niece and the funeral of my brother in law.

Frank had a meeting with President Butterfield and met with A.D. Taylor in the evening. We also had a very fine day today. I am collecting initiates for our national honor society under deadline. Why should this feel like pulling teeth chasing seniors? One company called me about two of our students for positions.

It was a regular day of work for Frank. He was to meet with the college president in the afternoon. For me it was a Sunday with a large audience to address for another of our honors spring open house. Three students spoke really well about their experiences. They are always the stars of the program.

Frank met with a trustee out in Sandwich to view their property. By the end of the day he met up with his wife back home and their horse Dixie. An Open House for Honors in the morning followed by the Riverscaping symposium down in Springfield in the afternoon. Probably over 100 people there. Gave a talk then then moderating a session.

Frank attended conferences with Hurd and Sears in Sandwich where he made a presentation about Village Improvement. Today I attended two lectures one of a new approach to Landscape Heritage and another more classic cultural landscape, which especially resonated with our Harvard colleagues. For whatever reason, I do not feel a connection at least to the latter….maybe that is just my Brown background speaking to me.
