Congratulations to all of our sociology majors who have won awards in the department and across the University!
The following Sociology Majors have won awards offered through the Sociology Department, The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and the University Alumni Association in 2010.
Sociology Department Award Winners:
Sociology Best Paper Award: Alexandra Adler, “The Impacts of Deindustrialization and Re-development Strategies of the Puerto Rican Population in Holyoke, Massachusetts”
The Sociology Department Best Paper Award is given to the sociology major who produces the best paper, exam, or written product in a sociology course, independent study, as a thesis, or for any other substantial sociological writing.
Henry Korson Best Senior: Stephanie Agiomavritis
The Sociology Department Best Senior Award is granted to one outstanding senior sociology major based on departmental nominations and references.
Henry Korson Best Junior Award: Mary Lashway
The Sociology Department Best Junior Award is granted to one outstanding junior Sociology major based on departmental nominations and references.
David S. Leiderman Award: Angela Kantner
The Sociology Department Leiderman Award is given to an outstanding senior major with a commitment to improving the lives of children and families.
Sociology in Practice Award: Megan Sutor-Segoshi
The Sociology in Practice Award recognizes one sociology major who has proven their ability to apply sociological ideas and insights to pressing social problems.
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Award Winners:
Ansin Study Abroad Fellowships: Tiffany Aleman, Giannah Coutard, Cameron Cox
The Ansin Study Abroad Fellowship has helped SBS students travel to places like China, Korea, Spain, France, Australia, England, Italy, Senegal, Denmark, Scotland, Puerto Rico and more. This award helps undergraduates to live and study overseas.
Social and Behavioral Sciences Dean’s Opportunity Scholarship: Nicholas O’Malley, Sierra Simmons, Bliss Requa-Trautz, Jaimie Grazi
The SBS Dean’s Opportunity Fund was created and is supported by contributions from alumni of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Students must be juniors with declared majors in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Candidates must also have a 3.5 GPA or above and 45 residential credits.
Alumni Association Award Winner:
William F. Field Alumni Scholarship: Stephanie Nunes
The William F. Field Alumni Scholars Program was established in 1976 to recognize and honor third-year students for their academic achievements at UMass Amherst. The program was named in honor of William F. Field, the university’s first Dean of Students, for his outstanding support of academic excellence and his personal commitment to bringing out the best in every student.
