Traveling to Amherst

Amherst, Massachusetts is a lovely town situated in the Pioneer Valley. Our location comes with some logistical challenges for out-of-town folks who need to travel to join us.

The following airports are the most accessible to/from Amherst:

  • Logan Airport in Boston, MA
  • Bradley Airport in Hartford, CT
  • JFK International Airport in New York, NY

From/to Logan Airport. You will have more options from/to Boston (South Station). To get to South Station from Logan, you will need to take the Silver Line. Service from Logan is free. You have two main options. Peter Pan operates a bus service that goes from/to South Station. There are direct services from/to Logan, but they are quite limited. Amtrak operates a train service to nearby Northampton, where you can then take the PVTA bus to get to Amherst.

From/to Bradley Airport. You will have to get to the Windsor Locks Amtrak Station. To get there, you can take the 24 bus, or by taking Lyft or Uber. From Windsor Locks Amtrak Station, take the train to Northampton, where you can then take the PVTA bus to get to Amherst.

From/to JFK. You will have to get to the Penn Station for Amtrak, which you can take to Northampton. From Northampton, you will have to take the PVTA bus to get to Amherst. You will have to get to Port Authority Bus Terminal for Peter Pan (to Amherst) or for Greyhound (to Northampton/Springfield). From Northampton/Springfield, you will have to take the PVTA bus to get to Amherst.

Another transportation option is Valley Transporter, which operates a shuttle service to Amherst from Logan/Bradley/JFK airports. These shuttles must be booked in advance. So if you are traveling with a group, booking a Valley Transporter together is a good cost-saving option. Their Logan rates can be found here; their Bradley rates, here; and information on how to book to/from JFK, here.

It is also possible to get a Lyft or an Uber from Logan/Bradley, though it can become quite costly. Alternatively, you might find it convenient to rent a car while you are here, to drive from the airport to Amherst. Please contact us if you will be driving and need a parking pass (parking is not free on the university campus).
