Event Summary:

• Members (22 including 4 E-Board members) were welcomed, attendance was taken
• Members introduced themselves (“what do you geek out about” was a major hit)
• We detailed and discussed our semester events
• Website walkthrough
• Formed groups randomly for club members to meet each other
• The meeting concluded with fresh veggies and hummus outside

September 21, 2021
6:00pm – 7:00pm

Event Summary:

• 21 attendees joined by Professor Fernando Romero (our co-advisor) and Professor Nick Tooker (club friend)
• After a brief welcome by Nate, everyone introduced themselves
• Kyle Murphy presented for a bit on his background and experience in the construction industry
• 3 sets of half size plans were distributed to the three groups of students
• Kyle taught how to read the title page, what information the index holds, how to use a scale to understand station distances, centerlines, and take-offs
• Optional resume tips from Kyle for those who stayed after

October 6, 2021
7:30am – 9:30am

Event Summary:

• 52 attendees joined by club friend Dr. Nick Tooker
• After distributing PPE and grabbing a bite to eat (poop shaped cookies baked by Dr. Tooker and granola bars), we took a 15 minute bus ride to the construction site
• Students were split into three groups, led by:
  • Dr. Tooker who talked about the wastewater treatment process
  • Justin Skelly, project manager for DPC Engineering, who talked about the scope of the project, project management, difficulties encountered
  • Gill, field engineer for DPC Engineering who talked about cool construction projects and policy
• Each group rotated after 20 minute intervals

• Following our event with Ken Canty on Zoom a year ago, students came together to talk about the serious issues of race and discrimination both in the construction industry and now at UMass
• About 40 students were in attendance
• See the files below for our takeaways from the meeting along with Ken’s testimony before Congress on these issues
• Thank you to NSBE and SHPE for co-hosting this event with us, and thank you to all who participated
• Thank you Ken for being a leader in this cause. We will continue to spread your message and your story.

Event Summary:

• Presented by Henry Barbaro, Stormwater Program Supervisor at MassDOT, former UMass alumni
• 15 attendees

Key takeaways:

• Potential for erosion is greatly magnified by construction activities
• A large part of planning for a construction site is/should be planning how to prevent erosion so as to protect sediment loading to MA water resources and wetlands
• There are many ways that soil can erode from a construction site, and many different runoff controls
• The most important and least expensive best management practice is good communication
