Allowable Materials

materialthicknessspeed/power rangenotes
paper, chipboard, cardboard, all can be cut however charring may occur. Pay close attention and watch for fire.
masonite, plywood, hard and soft wood, MDFup to 1/2"materials that contain significant amounts of glues produce significant charring. Caution must be taken to find correct settings and to avoid fire.
acrylic, mylar, HIPS (styrene sheet)up to 1/2"all cut well although care must be taken to find optimal settings. Slow travel and over power will cause charring and can result in fire.
cloth, felt, etc.
rubberMUST NOT CONTAIN CHLORINE!
Materials not listedIf your material is not listed you must obtain a MSDS for evaluation before attempting to cut.

Banned Materials

materialrisknotes
PVC (including azek and sintra), vinyl, pleather, etc.emits chlorine gas when cutthe emissions from these materials will damage optics, corrode electronics, and is poisonous to breathe.
polycarbonate (Lexan)burns when cut, discolors, catches firelooks like acrylic, although is shatterproof. poor choice for laser cutter, can be cut on cnc router.
HDPE
polystyrene foam (pink foam, blue foam, green foam, white bead foam)catches fire!leading cause of laser fires. highly flammable. do not use.
urethane foamreleases cyanide gas when cut
Pressure treated wood
