Tools and Supplies

This is a list of the most essential tools and supplies that you will need for digital fabrication. It is often the case that student projects require special materials or tooling beyond what is listed below.

Digital storage:

Access to your Apps@UMass account (using your NetID and login, DO NOT save this information on lab computers)

4 GB USB flash drive (for use with the CNC router, must be formatted for windows, and cannot exceed 8GB)

Measuring tools:

6″ Digital Caliper (try not to spend more than $25)

here are two options: one, two

12′ (or larger) tape measure

Machine tools:

1/4″ upcut or downcut end mill for CNC router (for 2d or 2.5d cutting)

here are some options: upcut one, two – downcut one, two

note: brands are generally less important than material and tool geometry. All of the above tools are solid carbide. High Speed Steel is also acceptable, however, will drastically increase cutting times. Try not to spend more than $25 each

optional: ball nose end mill for CNC router (for 3d carving)

Materials:

You will be responsible for sourcing your own materials for use on the laser cutter and the CNC router. Additionally, any printing done through the DML will come with a charge. Please see the list of local resources here. It is reasonable to budget between $150 – $250 for materials and supplies.
