Welcome to the course site for Design of Wood Structures (BCT 540) at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
This course provides a foundation of wood design concepts for the aspiring wood builders and designers of tomorrow. Contemporary wood structures, like the UMass Design Building shown above, demonstrate ingenuity and new direction. Efficient in design and environmentally responsible, wood is being integrated into showcase structures in more and more creative and inspiring ways every day.
The content of this course is an important part of the curriculum for students of building construction, architecture and engineering. Students will develop several core skills to prepare them for work and careers in the building industry, such as: designing, building and testing wood structures, working productively in interdisciplinary teams, and learning leadership and communication skills.
