A couple weeks ago, I read a short blurb in one of the local weekly newspapers announcing that East Brookfield’s Second Chance Animal Shelter had begun a campaign to promote good news about pets this holiday season. Director Sheryl Blancato stated:
We want to see the happiness that pets bring into our lives spread this holiday season with this unique challenge. There are so many negative images on social media [that] we want to show the positives too.
Plunging into the social media frenzy, they came up with the lengthy and awkward hash tag #mistlepawholidaychallenge. Pet guardians are instructed to take a video or a photo of their pets; these images are supposed to show how well the pet is treated, thus demonstrating how much the pet adds to people’s lives. Then we’re encouraged to upload these to social media.
Though I’m addicted to my Twitter feed, I certainly don’t cultivate followers (I have a grand total of 4), but I said to myself, Well, why not participate anyway. I love my cat, and he’s quite photogenic. (All cats are, right? That’s why cats rule the Internet!) So that’s exactly what I did. But don’t follow me on Twitter (I’m @bikehara) because I rarely tweet. Instead, put my blog on your RSS feed and you might be delighted by photos like the following:
Karim is gazing out the living room window at Walnut Street.
Karim enjoys snoozing on his window perch.
Karim is looking disgruntled, perhaps because he’s in the middle of grooming.
Karim is enjoying his dinner.
Finally, here’s the photo I posted to Twitter.
