Purchasing textbooks

Has anybody found a great deal on the textbook? If you find a deal, post it here and help out the rest of the class!

The required textbook is:
Chemistry & Chemical Reactivity 7th Edition.  Kotz, Treichel, and Townsend.  Electronic and/or hard copy.

The electronic copy is available for free through OWL.

You will also need a PRS transmitter.

The textbook and PRS transmitter can be purchased at the bookstore online (http://www.bkstr.com/Home/10001-10571-1?demoKey=d), or the Textbook Annex. But you can almost certainly save a bundle if you purchase them ahead of time (used?) or from some other source.

The student solutions manual, and the study guide, are not required.

I got my book new from Amazon with next day shipping for around $170 compared to $212 from the annex. If you get anything shipped FedEx they wont deliver to your dorm or the cluster office you have to go to the fedex office in the student center. I had to call to find that out.

    Hi Jesse,
bummer about the textbook! Remember that you can use the eBook – find it within OWL – to get you by.

    Hi Shahzad-
Safety glasses just need to meet minimal requirements to be useful: non-shatter, transparent, things like that. The UStore sells suitable glasses. But if you want to stick it to ‘the man’ you can buy glasses from the Chemistry Club, an undergraduate organization. ChemClub typically sells glasses in ISB after class, but before Lab, so you can be patient.

on the course syllabus sheet, it states that “American Optical Safety Glasses #484A” is a required material for this course. My question is that do we need to buy this for ourselves or are there pairs available to be used in the labs. If we need to buy these, where can I get a pair?

    Giulia-
You should use whatever helps you learn best. If you are comfortable with the eBook, then go that route. But I personally have a hard time reading books on a computer screen, so I would definitely purchase a physical book (albeit possibly a cheaper edition).

I just went to the book store and they were completely out of the book until either tomorrow or even possibly friday. I am currently looking/trying to the the OWLs and it seems the book would be very helpful. Is there any chance the due date could be pushed back a few days, at least until more books come in?

Is it alright for me to use just the electronic version of the text book? Or is it better to buy the text book?

    half.com is a good website.

http://www.swaptree.com/ is also very effective and environmental. The downside to the above comment about half.com is that you can get pretty annoying spam to your email. The plus side is that the books are reasonable.

InterWrite PRS RF Personal Response System Student Remote.
This is the radio frequency model.
Found on Amazon (used, $45). I don’t know if this is a good deal.
Also found on Ebay, if you can tolerate the auction format.

Be sure that your PRS remote looks like the one pictured on the course website.

*** Do not get the IR (infrared) model! ***

I found the current textbook edition on Amazon: (new $172/used $143)

The enhanced version of the 7th edition would be perfectly acceptable.

The International Student edition is just like the US edition, but cheaper for those of you coming from the UK. It can be shipped to the US, but watch out for the shipping cost/time and the exchange rate: Amazon.co.uk (£45 new/£35 used +shipping). This is not an endorsement, but rather sharing of information.

Older editions of the text (5th or 6th) are likely to work, as they are very similar to the current edition. But you are responsible for the assigned readings/HW, as I will only work with the current edition.
