Britanny,
I think that this was covered today. The proposed structure (above) has a big problem: the N has exceeded its octet limit. While this leads to good formal charge distribution (N,O,H are all FC=0), the octed violation is a big problem. The preferred structure is for only one double bond between N and a terminal O, which leads to the two good resonance structures. These will have formal charges that are non-zero, but at least the octet is intact.

Hey, I am trying to do the Luis Structure Draw owl, I cannot get past #3, could anyone help? HNO_3_, I know there is 24 valence electrons but i cant get the drawing write.
I believe it would be
H-O(with 4dots)-N=O(with 4dots)
ll
O(with 4dots)
but this doesn’t work can anyone help?
Thank you,
Brittany Bausch

It says OWLS due Thursday but I don’t see anything posted. Are they going to be posted later on this week or something?

I dont understand the Millikan Oil drop experiment…it asks what forces the oil to go downward…isnt it the Millikan force of gravity?
