Since 2002, the University of Massachusetts Amherst has offered a Graduate Certificate in Cognitive Science. Matriculated graduate students in the participating departments (currently Communication Disorders, Computer Science, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Psychology) may prepare a coherent plan of study (15 credits minimum) spanning one or more departments outside his or her home department and seek approval from the Cognitive Science Certificate Steering Committee. The successful candidate will receive a Certificate in Cognitive Science upon receiving the home department’s terminal degree.
You can learn more about the program by choosing from the other menu items under “Graduate certificate” above. Then you can download the plan of study .pdf form, which you can fill out using Acrobat Reader. You should then give it to your home department’s representative, who will discuss it with you and present it to the Cognitive Science Certificate Steering Committee. Please contact the chair of the committee, Andrew Cohen, for further information.
The Steering Committee consists of the departmental representatives, who are currently:
- Communication Disorders: Jacquie Kurland
- Computer Science: Rod Grupen
- Linguistics: Brian Dillon
- Philosophy: Hilary Kornblith
- Psychological and Brain Sciences: Andrew Cohen
