Beginning with the UMass “tailgating” ritual, our class 9 discussion (10.1.19) involved naming and analyzing some elements of the power/oppression matrix constructing youth sports culture and gender power inequities. This included cultural scenes, beliefs, and practices in high school and college, issues in gender identity formation, fe/male power disparities, the performance of sexual objectification, the role of social media, what else?
From the brainstorming with a partner you began in class, create an illustrated meme that somehow represents an issue that’s evoked for you.
Guidelines:
- There are two parts: 1. a visual illustration, primarily hand-drawn; 2. a phrase.
- For the visual illustration, use simple methods and materials: drawing, stick figures, collage, markers, crayons, cut-and-paste. You might include some digital elements but the primary construction must be by hand.
- Written phrase could be several words or a sentence that somehow adds to the meaning of the illustration. Could be banner text like a headline, short phrases of the kind that adorn visual memes, cartoon bubbles, what else? MUST BE CLEAR AND LEGIBLE.
- For size, use 8×11 or other sizes that fit your style and preference.
- Create a digital copy; smartphone photo is an option; a digital scan is preferred.
