- Aphasia Connections is a 1-credit Independent Study that involves a community service-learning program in aphasia awareness. Aphasia Connections allows students in ComDis the opportunity to be matched with a person who has aphasia and to meet with that person once per week for conversational and social interaction. Depending on the individual with aphasia’s living situation and driving ability, these meetings may occur in a nursing home, assisted living community, house, coffee shop, etc. This may be in the Amherst area or within a 30-minute radius of Amherst.
This 1-credit independent study is a fantastic opportunity for juniors and seniors to develop supported conversation skills, learn about the social impact of aphasia, and give back to the community in a meaningful and satisfying way.
Requirements include:
· Attending one training session at the beginning of the semester to learn about aphasia and supported conversation;
· At least ten weekly visits with an assigned person with aphasia;
· Attending a mid-semester meeting to discuss and share experiences;
· Attending one UMass Amherst Stroke Support Group meeting;
· A mid-semester paragraph describing your experience;
