Pre-graduate programs

UMASS PREP a 1 year internship that encourages students of under-represented groups who hold recent baccalaureate degrees to pursue doctorates in biomedical sciences. PREP participants work as apprentice scientists in laboratories and participate in professional development activities.

UMass On-RAMP summer program a month-long designed to facilitate the transition to graduate school by providing mentoring and professional development opportunities prior to the start of fall classes.

Graduate Students

Early stage applications

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program 3 year fellowship program for graduate students (MS or PhD) in STEM, especially from minority groups. Annual stipend of $34,000 + $12,000 Institution Allowance. Must have completed no more than one academic year of full-time graduate study. Can only apply once.

DoD National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) for US citizens or US Nationals undergraduates or PhD students in their 1st or 2nd year. Permanent residents are NOT eligible. Must attend the DoD National NDSEG Fellows Conference within their award term.

NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA (F31-diversity) supports the research training of predoctoral students from groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research workforce. up to 5 years, with $25, 000 stipend, up to 16, 000 Institutional allowance and $4,500 research.

Gilliam Fellowships for Advanced Studies By invitation only. 3 years of dissertation research, typically in years 3-5 of study. Awards are made to PhD adviser-Student pairs. Annual stipend $33,000 + $10,000 institution allowance + $4,000 for fellow career development+ $3,000 Adviser allowance.

NIH G-SOAR Summer Program Graduate Summer Opportunities to Advance Research. G-SOAR students will spend the summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the world’s leading scientists. For 1st or 2nd year graduate students or MS. Students with disabilities; students who are Pell Grant-eligible; students from historically minoritized groups; students who identify as LGBTQ; and individuals disadvantaged by circumstances that have negatively impacted their educational opportunities, including recent natural disasters.

Hertz Foundation provides up to $250,000 for 5 years. For college seniors, first-year graduate students, or in a gap year preparing to apply to graduate school that intend to pursue a PhD in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering. Studies toward understanding and solving major, near-term problems facing society.

Facebook Fellowship supports promising doctoral students who are engaged in innovative and relevant research in areas related to computer science and engineering at an accredited university. Provides 2 years of paid tuition and fees, a $42,000 annual stipend. must remain enrolled full-time for the duration of the Fellowship.

GEM Fellowship provides graduate fellowships at the MS and PhD levels coupled with paid summer internships . GEM also offers fellowships without paid summer internships. up to 5 years of support.

P.E.O Scholar Award one-time, competitive, merit-based awards intended to recognize and encourage academic excellence and achievement by women in doctoral-level programs. Be within two years of graduating from a doctoral program and have at least one full academic year of work remaining in August of the year you are awarded

Any stage applications

Fulbright Student Program for students in STEM and Public Health. Funds activities to take place during one academic year in a participating country outside the U.S. Permanent residents are NOT eligible. Apply before obtaining degree.

GWIS Fellowship The Graduate Women In Science (GWIS) National Fellowship Program helps fund research in the natural sciences and promotes academic and professional careers for women in science. Up to $10, 000 for 1 year.

Josephine de Karman Fellowship Trust $25, 000 dissertation fellowship for 1 academic year

Hispanic Scholarship Fund for students in STEM of Hispanic heritage. $500 to $5000 award, based on merit

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans for Immigrants and children of immigrants younger than 30 years old; awards $ 90,000 over 2 years. Merit-based (see criteria)

Ford Foundation dissertation Fellowship. Supports last year of dissertation. Stipend $28, 000.

NIH Administrative Supplements for Health-Related Research administrative supplements to improve the diversity of the research workforce including those from groups underrepresented in health-related research. Direct costs vary from less than $5,000 to more than $100,000 depending on the career level of the candidate. Many participating institutes

500 women Scientists Fellowships for the Future Recognizing women of color leading in STEM. $5000 honorarium + $1000/year in supplementary project funds

Thermo Fisher Scientific Antibody Scholarship Program $35,000 in scholarship funding to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an accredited college. Biology, chemistry, bio-chemistry or related life science field.

Late stage applications

NIH Blueprint D-SPAN Award (F99/K00) Diversity Specialized Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Advancement in Neuroscience (D-SPAN). Award to support Pre to Postdoctoral transition. For outstanding graduate students who are from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in neuroscience research. up to 2 years in the F99 fellowship phase and up to 4 years in the K00 career development phase.
