Auditory Vibration Assistant

Abstract — The purpose of this project is to give the audio impaired the ability to be more aware of their surroundings. In busy environments such as the city or rooms with much activity, it can be hard for these individuals to be aware of everything around them. Our device will help such individuals by pinpointing specific noise sources and indicating the direction in which it came from via motor vibrations. The motors will respond to stimuli such as fire alarms, calling the user’s name, children crying, police sirens, gunshots, and explosions. Our device aims to be a cost-effective alternative to existing alerting devices and give a more versatile tool. Although common auditory assistance devices such as hearing aids help users process sound, ours serves more as an alert system. Our device will be able to alert a user to life-threatening or otherwise important disturbances in their day-to-day lives.
