Gerald Friedman, UMass Amherst economics professor and associate chair of the Department of Economics, consults with groups advocating single-payer health care across the United States. Most recently Friedman met with legislative leadership in Maryland to present his report, “Financing the Maryland Health Security Act.” He also discussed his report on WEAA’s The Marc Steiner Show, WYPR’s Midday with Dan Rodricks, and at the annual meeting of the Maryland Physicians for a National Health Plan.

Seeking to take money from others to subsdize healthcare does not solve the cost increase of healthcare. Moving from a current oligopoly to a monopoly will deliver worse quality care and make healthcare less accessible. Need to apply free market principals where we allow more providers over state lines to offer “a la carte” options for insured’s and let the consumer control pricing I.e. if you do not smoke, lower cost, not over weight, lower cost, carry higher deductibles. Also need to shift healthcare away from employers and to indivuals like auto and home insurance. Commoditizing healthcare like phones and price will come down. The main purpose of insurance is to transfer risk and allow the market place to determine price and access. The single payer is neither and will compound cost increases.
