Ellis and Messina Foraminifera Catalogue

The Libraries have recently added the 2010 online edition of the Ellis and Messina Foraminifera Catalogue from Micropaleontology Press. You can search fossil micro-organisms by genus, subgenus, species, subspecies, variety, author and year, among other characteristics.

Zassuku Plus Now Available

The Libraries have added a subscription to Zassuku Plus, an index of periodical articles published in Japanese. Coverage is from 1868 forwards and includes local periodicals and those published in former colonies. You will need a browser with Japanese character input and display capabilities.

Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory & Criticism Now Available Online

The Johns Hopkins Guide to Literary Theory & Criticism offers an introduction to critical analysis of literary and cultural productions in over 240 entries by 270 contributors. You can view a list of entries (e.g. aesthetics, linguistics and language, Russian formalism,  Adrienne Rich), an index of topics (e.g. ancients/moderns, iconology, moral science), or search in text or bibliography.

HeinOnline: New Legal Studies Resource

The HeinOnline includes complete coverage beginning with the first volume of more than 1,200 law and law-related periodicals, classic legal treatises from the 18th and 19th centuries, and English Reports, Full Reprint (1220-1867). You can browse through or search within the libraries, or look up specific titles. The 12 distinct libraries are:

Reaxys: Three Chemistry Databases Available via the Web

The UMass Amherst Libraries now subscribes to Reaxys which includes the authoritative Beilstein, Gmelin and Patent Chemistry databases. This new source from Elsevier provides a web-based search and retrieval system for organic, organo-metallic, and inorganic chemistry data from about 3800 journals and patents from U.S., World and European patent publications. You can query the database by drawing a structure or reaction, typing text, or loading a previously saved structure or reaction.

The Libraries previously had a subscription to the Beilstein database on the Crossfire platform. In addition to Beilstein, Reaxys provides more extensive data from the Gmelin and Patent Chemistry sources.  The legacy Crossfire Commander software client can still be used, but this access will be discontinued in August, 2010.  Users are encouraged to use Reaxys now to benefit from the increased coverage and functionality.

National Academy of Sciences Biographical Memoirs

The National Academy of Sciences Biographical Memoirs provides brief biographies of deceased members of the National Academy of Science, written by people who best knew their work. “These biographies provide a personal and scholarly view of the lives and work of America’s most distinguished scientists and a biographical history of science in the United States.”

U.S. Geological Survey Publications Warehouse

The USGS Publications Warehouse provides a catalog of older publications and a source for downloading newer ones. You may search for warehouse contents, or browse for maps, aerial photographs, real time data (wildfires, landslides, volcanoes and … Pintail Duck Migration), satellite imagery, software and biology publications (by U.S. region and research stations).

Data Sets: Data.gov and ICPSR

In the interest of promoting open government, Data.gov offers a tool for searching and retrieving data produced by the Executive branch of the Federal Government. You can browse for data sets by category or government agency, and you can search raw data by keyword, category or agency. Data sets are also featured, for example the Airline on Time Performance and Causes of Delay from the Department of Transportation, and the DataFerret, “an online anyalytically oriented, self-service tool designed todeliver a wide variety of population, health, economic, geographic and housing information about the United States.”

The Interuniversity Consotieum for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the University of Michigan is a depository for raw data sets in the social sciences. Users have to set up an individual “My Data” account using a UMass email address while on campus, and cant then use this account login for access from anywhere. You can search for data, or browse by subject, country or other countries.
