More games

A growing number of people play a video game daily. Most connected over the internet, this new world for people to live in. Some become helplessly addicted to these games.

Take internet famous  Octavian Morosan, better known as Kripparrian or Kripp. He played video games so much it consumed his life.

After loosing work as a computer technician. A lonely, competitive 20 year old was in search of friends and a way to validate his life. Kripp turned to online video games.

This screenshot shows one of the games he play, World of Warcraft. With a game time of over 425 days.

While playing these games he gained validation of what he was doing. His computer life took over his normal life. This video is him talking about his everyday life. He never includes any interactions with other people.

His diet became unbalanced consisting of mostly orange juice and falafel. With incredibly low activity level, this sort of behavior is not healthy and often made him sick.

At his worse streaming for 16 hours everyday, Kripp began to spend all of his time on his video games. Never playing less then 10 hours a day has totaled up more than 8,870 hours of stream time, in just a couple years.

Putting this much time into video games gave Kripp the nick name “no life Kripp” This seams appropriate because he didn’t spend much time doing anything else.

As Kripp grows older he was able to turn his addiction into his job. Getting sponsored and paid to host game tournaments, promote products, and just play video games. Kripp has taken what consumed his life and made it into a profession.

Kripp is now a leading figure in the world of online gaming. Playing less and focusing on being a commentator for games, and running tournaments he has successfully made a career for himself.

As happy as Kripp’s story turned out to be, most people don’t end up so lucky. Usually stories like these don’t really end, they just get caught up in video games and never stop playing.

Ross Ulbricht & The Silk Road

When most people think of the Silk Road they think of the ancient trade routes that traced across the Asian continent hundreds of years ago. Recently, however, the term Silk Road has been given a new definition. In 2011, following the growth of the deep web, the first online darknet market went online.

News stations began drawing attention to the worldwide market in the middle of the year.

The website was allegedly created and maintained by a Ross William Ulbricht. He used the alias Dread Pirate Roberts (shortened to DPR) as a screen name on the site.

The online marketplace offered services ranging from drugs, counterfeit cash, forged legal documents, hacking services, weapons, and more. Below is an image showing the homepage of the site.

Bitcoins

In order to keep the buyer and seller identities anonymous, bitcoins were
used to pay for transactions. Bitcoins are the anonymous online currency that encrypt the information of both parties involved in the transaction.

The market was estimated to have generated over a billion dollars worth of sales, and Ulbricht was found with over three and a half million at the time of his capture.

Below is a story from CNN covering the FBI’s capture of the Silk Road founder.

Among the rest of the posessions at Ulbricht’s house, authorities also found these fake driver licenses after authorities arrested him (business insider).

Today the website has been shut down and seized by the FBI. This is what the website looks like currently.

Since the removal of the Silk Road, other similar marketplaces have risen in its place. Vendors from the silk road simply had to switch over to a new marketplace and the illegal transactions continue every day.
