Guide: Who to Reach Out to

Sometimes, determining the best person to help you with a particular issue can be confusing. Here is a quick guide to help you figure out who to talk to for what sorts of issues.

Advisors and Mentors of the Environmental Science Program:

1. Peer Advisors

Come talk to peer advisors if you’re interested in changing your major to Environmental Science or if you have questions about the major or the minor. We’re always glad to help you out. If you don’t know who you should talk to about a specific question or concern, we’re a good place to start. Our contact details are here.

2. Your Primary Faculty Advisor

Do you have questions about internships, your focus area, or do you need advice about classes or program requirements? Every student in Environmental Science has a primary academic advisor assigned to them. This is the person you should go to for answers to these types of questions. Find out how to contact your primary faculty advisor here.

3. Other Faculty Mentors

No single person can serve all your mentoring needs. The most proactive students are always looking out for faculty whose interests match their own. Our Environmental Science faculty have a wealth of knowledge about the field, both at and outside of UMass. You can find out more information about the faculty mentors in our program here.

4. Chief Undergraduate Advisor and Program Managers

Deb Henson is the Chief Undergraduate Advisor and Program Manager for the Environmental Science program. Craig Nicolson serves as the Assistant Program Manager. Both are on the third floor of Holdsworth Hall, and their contact information and office hours can be found here. If you are ready to join the major or declare a minor, Dr. Henson is the person to speak to. If you’re looking to explore a double major or have questions about fitting in a study abroad or domestic exchange semester, see either Dr. Henson or Dr. Nicolson.

No matter what issue you are facing, it is better to reach out to advisors earlier rather than later. We have a comprehensive list of on-campus resources that are not specific to the Environmental Science program, for example the Financial Aid Office, Mental Health services, and more.
