Student Spotlight: Chris Clark

Congratulations to Chris Clark for Recognition as a 21st Century Leader!

Recently, Environmental Science student Chris Clark (class of 2020) was recognized by the University as a 21st Century Leader. Chris worked in the Timme-Laragy Lab (located in the School of Environmental Health & Health Sciences), where he studied toxic PFAS chemicals. This work led Chris to make an enormous impact on his hometown of Westfield, MA.

Together with the Westfield Residents Advocating for Themselves (WRAFT), Chris successfully lobbied for the “commonwealth to allocate over $20 million in assistance to PFAS-contaminated communities and establish stricter PFAS standards.” Having just graduated from UMass, Chris will continue studying issues related to “remediation and regulation of toxic [environmental] contamination” at the University of Michigan.

Congratulations Chris!

Student Spotlight: Rachel Gies

Meet Rachel Gies!

In the summer between her freshman and sophomore years, EnviSci student Rachel Gies (class of 2022) worked as an intern for the TRC Corporation, an environmental consulting firm in Boston. Rachel’s contributions helped the firm advance its work with the Lechmere Extension Project, which is a part of the MBTA’s GLX (Green Line Extension) Project. Rachel says her “role as an intern was to conduct soil and groundwater sampling which determines whether the soil is contaminated or subject to reuse along the right-of-way.”

Additionally, Rachel was in charge of a master Excel spreadsheet which kept track of “when, where, and how much soil [was] transported off site.” As a part of her training for this internship, Rachel earned her OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER, and OSHA-10 construction certifications. Way to go, Rachel!

Along with her major in Environmental Science, Rachel is also completing a minor in NRC (Natural Resources Conservation), and a GIST (geographic information science and technology) certificate. She says her internship at TRC helped prepare her for her current work as a member of the GIS Team on campus.

Thanks for sharing, Rachel!
