The Silk Road Ensemble, a Grammy-nominated collective of performers from Asia, Europe and the Americas, combines superb musicianship with an eagerness to connect across cultures and musical traditions. Western string instrumentalists perform with folk percussionists and virtuosos of instruments like the pipa (Chinese lute), gaita (Galician bagpipes), tabla (Indian hand drums), shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute), and kamancheh (Persian bowed lute). The ensemble’s lively concert features some classical music and sumptuous traditional music alongside new work by composers the world over.

Celebrating 30 years of performing, the Halau Hula Ka No’eau Ensemble captivates audiences with their exquisite presentations of dance with a strong storytelling element. At this concert, choreographer and cultural historian Michael Pili Pang presents a new work, based on legends about the divine creators of the Hawaiian Islands, that innovatively combines traditional hula, music, and chants. (This show was rescheduled after a weather cancellation the previous season.)

BalletX, Philadelphia’s premier contemporary ballet, unites distinguished choreographers with an outstanding company of world-class dancers to forge new works of athleticism, emotion, and grace. Founded in 2005 by Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan, BalletX encourages formal experimentation while preserving rigorous technique. The company will perform a mixed-rep program, including Trey McIntire’s Big Ones, set to music by Amy Winehouse.

Ride the wind and dream with AIR PLAY, a modern spectacle that brings to life the very air we breathe. Flying umbrellas, larger-than-life balloons, giant kites floating over the audience, and the biggest snow globe you’ve ever seen will make you gasp in wonder and laugh until it hurts.
AIR PLAY is a circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal land of air, transforming the ordinary into objects of uncommon beauty. Fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, confetti turns into the night sky, and an enormous canopy of hovering silk forever alters the siblings’ future. The creation of husband & wife team Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone, AIR PLAY merges their circus and street theater performance art with the sculptural artistry of Daniel Wurtzel. This poetic ode to childhood will enchant and electrify the young and young at heart.

Qyrq Qyz (Forty Girls) is a legendary, epic Central Asian tale in which a girl gathers a group of 40 young female warriors to vanquish invaders, securing her clans’ freedom. Uzbek filmmaker Saodat Ismailova’s adaptation transforms the epic into a multimedia work that places live performance by female reciters and instrumentalists against a backdrop of multiscreen video projection, With a musical score by the celebrated Tashkent-based composer Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, Qyrq Qyz is a true celebration of women’s musical traditions in the Muslim world.

This Venice-based period-instrument ensemble specializes in vibrant performances of the works of one of that city’s native sons, Antonio Vivaldi, as well as other early-music composers such as Caldara, Locatelli, and Galuppi. The orchestra is known for their rediscovery of 17th– and 18th-century masterpieces and their revelatory pursuit of the essence of the compositions they play, which the Washington Post once described as “tearing the powdered wig off this music once and for all.” Their extensive touring has brought them to concert venues around the world; for this concert they will be joined by virtuoso musician Anna Fusek on wood recorder. “There’s a wildness in Vivaldi’s music that makes it so exciting, a sense of barely controlled fury in his huge, cascading waves of sound.
