Diversity and Inclusion

GWIS recognizes that women’s issues cannot be discussed productively without the lens of intersectionality. The diversity and inclusion committee aims to make GWIS a resource for all graduate women, especially those who share other marginalized identities that carry unique additional burdens.

GWIS aims to foster a community that supports underrepresented women in STEM while prioritizing uplifting marginalized voices. Diversity is an integral part of our history, culture, and identity. Inclusion is the way we treat and perceive our differences.

GWIS recognizes STEM has a deep and pervasive history of prejudiced policies and actions that continue today. As part of our mission of fighting for greater equity in STEM, we believe in recognizing and breaking down innate systemic prejudice in turn preventing the STEM community from reaching full equity and inclusion.

Graduate Women in STEM is committed to actively interrogating our own biases as well as educating ourselves and those around us on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM. We aspire to create an inclusive culture where all forms of diversity are recognized as real value. We recognize and welcome all people, regardless of race, gender identity, disability, nationality, sexual orientation, religion, or socio-economic background. We value the contributions of all individuals to both GWIS and the STEM community more broadly. GWIS is a community in which we respect each other. We aspire to continuously address, self-educate, and question leadership regarding the diversity of the human experience.
