Core Wall Station
The CoreWall system allows access to a compilation of relevant paleoclimate data sets from all over the world. The software enables stratigraphic correlation, core description, and data visualization. At UMass, this system facilitates the data exchange on large international projects, such as the ongoing study of Lake El’gygytgyn, Siberia.
Geotek Core Splitter
The core splitter is designed to enable a fast, accurate, and repeatable method for splitting sediment cores. The quality of the split core affects imaging data and other measurements made on a split core surface, making the core splitting and important step in geological core analysis. The splitter uses two cutting saws to cut through any plastic core tubes (of diameters 5-15cm) up to a tube length of 155cm.

Geotek Multi-sensor Core Logger
The Geotek Multi-Sensor Core Logger (MSCL) system used allows us obtain a suite of geophysical measurements rapidly and accurately in a high-resolution, non-destructive analysis of geological cores. Data can be obtained from either whole core sections or split core sections. Sensors and systems on the Geotek include:
- High-resolution core imaging: full color digital imaging system. Produces RGB images and profile data from cores scanned.
- Color spectrophotometry: measures the reflectance of sediment in the near UV through the visible and just into the near IR range (wavelengths of 360-740nm). Provides a ‘true’ color representation of a core’s surface, and can act as a reliable proxy for carbonate content.
- Magnetic Susceptibility: allows us to measure the degree of magnetization of a material in response to an applied magnetic field. Changes in magnetic susceptibility correlate well with changes in sedimentary provenance and diagenetic environment.
- Gamma Ray Density: 137Cs gamma source in a lead shield. Provides a precise record of bulk density, an indicator of lithology and porosity changes.

Cox Analytical Systems Itrax XRF
Core scanner to produce optical RBG and micro-x-radiographic images, and magnetic susceptibility, as well as heavy and light elemental profiles in high resolution from centimeter to submillimeter scales. This instrument can be used to scan marine and lake cores for paleoclimate and other research interests. The Itrax scanner is housed in the XRF laboratory. The viking hat on top of the instrumentation ensures good luck and smiles as you collect your data.
