In the Eye of the Beholder?: Ideologies of Beauty & Race among Dominicans in the US
My research focuses on the issues of whiteness, beauty, and self-image among Dominican women from different generations living both in the DR and in the US. I am especially interested in a comparative historical analysis of the social, cultural, and political factors specific to the denial of African ancestry in the Dominican Republic, many of which have been defined vis-à-vis its relationship with both Haiti as well as the United States. In addition, I am interested in how these factors come together to frame the intersecting racialized, classed, and gendered experiences of many Dominicans living in the United States.
