SPARK Community of Practice: Strategies for Using SPARK in Large Classes

Our third and final SPARK Community of Practice lunch of the semester will be Thursday, November 15th, 12:30-1:30 p.m. “SPARK Community of Practice” is an interest group for faculty and instructors who are interested in discussing the successes, challenges and best practices they have discovered while using SPARK as well as finding out about the newest tools and features available.

The topic for this Community of Practice lunch is: Strategies for Using SPARK in Large Classes.

AGENDA:

  1. Professors Julie Caswell (Resources Economics) and Wilmore Webley (Microbiology) will talk about how they have used SPARK in their large courses (100+students) and what has worked well for them. Specific topics they are planning to discuss include: discussion boards with large numbers of students, group assignment collection, surveys, and grade management.
  2. Open Discussion: What tools in SPARK are useful for managing large classes? What strategies might be employed to change how large lecture courses are organized? What success or challenges have you encountered using these tools?
  3. A consultant from the Instructional Media Lab will demonstrate StudyMate, a new tool for generating self test, quizzes, and simple “game-style” content for delivery via SPARK.
