2013 NMC- ELI Horizon Report

On February 4, the NMC Horizon Report: 2013 Higher Education Edition was released. The Horizon ReportĀ  is a joint initiative between the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI).

Topics covered in this year’s report include:

  • Key technology trends (i.e., openess, MOOCs, skills from informal learning, personalizing learning, changing role of educators, shift towards online and collaborative learning)
  • Significant challenges to technology adoption in higher education (i.e., insufficient digital media literacy, lagging assessment, entrenched processes and practices, poor support for personalized learning, competition from alternate models, overall slow adoption of technologies)
  • Technologies with a time-to-adoption horizon of 1 year or less: MOOCs and tablet computing.
  • Technologies with a time-to-adoption horizon of 1 to 3 years: games and gamification, and learning analytics
  • Technologies with a time-to-adoption horizon of 4 to 5 years: 3D printing and wearable technology
