Neuroengineering is the combination of fields of neurosciences and engineering. It includes the development of devices or methodology to monitor brain activity as well as therapeutic devices that help overcome neurological conditions. It could also encompass new means of utilizing the brain’s activity.

Goal: Initiate new collaborative work in Neuroengineering. The proposal should lead towards new external funding in the field of neuroengineering.

Award Amounts: $10,000 – $30,000. Anticipated total funding, $100,000. Funds can be used for anything except faculty teaching buyout. Funds are awarded only to UMass Amherst faculty members.

Award length: 1 year with potential of 1 year renewal conditional on evidence of a grant submission.

Qualifications: Proposal must include two faculty members at UMass Amherst Amherst or one UMass Amherst faculty member and a collaborator at another institution. Researchers must present together in the Neurosciences Faculty Forum.

     • What are the roles of the investigators?

     • How will this lead to external funding?
     • Provide specific information regarding the potential external funding source
  5. Budget
     • What is the approximate amount
• NIH style Biosketch for each Investigator
• Names and contacts of three potential faculty reviewers at UMass
  • Reviewers must be in at least two different departments, preferably at least one engineer and one neuroscientist.

Rolling deadline for submission up to May 2, 2019

Preliminary Proposals will be reviewed by IONs.

If accepted, the investigators will be invited to present their proposal at a Faculty Forum, where it will be discussed and developed with input from other faculty members.

If successful, investigators will then be invited to write a full proposal, which will be reviewed to receive the funding.
