Tools for mapping and controlling complex biological systems
Ed Boyden is a leader in developing techniques for recording and manipulating neural activity using optical and physical probes. He is the co-inventor of optogenetics, using channelrhodopsin to stimulate neurons with light. His lab is developing new reporters as well as techniques such as expansion microscopy to allow nanometer scale resolution of neural structures.
