NIH/NIDCD Grant (1 R01 DC011526-01A1): “Overcoming Learned Non-Use in Chronic Aphasia: Behavioral, fMRI, and Quality of Life Outcomes”
This longitudinal study will examine short- and long-term treatment-induced behavioral and neuroplastic changes as observed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and effects on quality of life, in 24 participants with chronic moderate-to-severe aphasia, before and after intensive language therapy.
For more information, visit the UMass Media Press Release (In the Loop) or listen to the story on NEPR.

UMass Amherst MRI/MRS Pilot Research Grant: “Semantic vs Phonologic Cueing: Neural Networks Supporting Word Finding”
This study examines the effects of cueing on treatment-induced behavioral and cortical plastic changes as observed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in six participants with chronic aphasia pre- and post-intensive language therapy to improve word retrieval.
Unfunded Pilot Research: “Improving Aphasia Awareness: Stroke Survivors Tell Their Stories”
This study utilizes intensive script training, including individually-based computer-assisted home treatment programs to train individuals with aphasia to participate in community aphasia awareness education programs.
If you would like to participate in one of these research studies as an individual with aphasia seeking treatment or as a healthy, age-matched control, please contact:
