Vanilla originated from Mexico and becomes the second-most expensive spice after saffron, however it is challenging to grow vanilla successfully because of the unique horticultural requirements including shaded area, high humidity, and hand pollination. Less irrigation is needed during the growing period because vanilla has two root systems: roots in the ground and aerial root system. Vanilla extract only contains two ingredients: alcohol and vanilla beans.
