Good Luck on Exam Today

I hope everyone had a good weekend of exam preparation. Best of luck on the final today.

Remember, the exam is in Morrill 1 Room N321, which was the original classroom that we had at the start of the semester way back in September. 1:30 to 3:30, bring your brain, a pen or two, but no cheat sheets, books or notes.

Last day of class approaches …..

Yes, our next class on Thursday will be our last of the semester. We will finish the Derrick et al (2000) paper, and then discuss the Selbie & Caldwell (1996) jumping simulation. At the end of class we will spend a few minutes on the format of the final exam, which is scheduled for next Tuesday, December 16 (see the Kin 530 website for exact time and place).

Also, I posted the Answer Key for Assignment 7 (handed back today) on the Kin 530 website.

Modeling Notes & Slides Posted

I just posted the Modeling notes and slides to the Kin 530 website. Remember the readings for this last section are Chapter 10 (Simulation) in the Robertson textbook, and the 2 papers posted on the website (Derrick et al. 2000; Selbie & Caldwell 1996). Read Chapter 10 first, followed by the Derrick paper and then the Selbie paper last.  This should keep you out of trouble on the weekend.

Home Stretch now … Wednesday December 3

Hi Kin 530 …. we are definitely in the home stretch of the semester now. On Thursday we will finish the Energy, Power & Work section by talking more about the Aleshinsky power model as laid out in the Caldwell & Forrester (1992) paper. Also, as I mentioned in class yesterday, a new revised set of slides for Energy, Power & Work has been posted on the website.

After finishing the C&F paper, we will introduce the LAST section for the semester on Modeling, which will be the subject of the last two classes next Tuesday and Thursday (December 9 and 11). Readings for the Modeling section include Chapter 10 of the Robertson textbook (pp 211 to 225), and papers by Derrick et al (2000) and Selbie & Caldwell (1996). These latter 2 papers are also posted on the Kin 530 website.

Finally, don’t forget that the Final Exam is scheduled for Tuesday, December 16 at 1:30 PM in Morrill 1, Room N321.

Happy Thanksgiving

Next week we will finish energy, power and work on Tuesday, and then move onto the last section on Modeling. I have posted the two papers that you need to read for Modeling, but for next Tuesday be sure to focus on the Robertson & Winter (1980) paper, and the Caldwell & Forrester (1992) article.  I will wait to post slide corrections for energy, power and work until after the weekend, as I may make some changes before Tuesday.

Remember, Assignment 7 is due next Tuesday.  See you then.  Hope everyone has a great holiday; please travel safely.

News for November 21 – Weekend before Turkey

Next week is a shortie ….. class on Tuesday only, with Thursday reserved for family, turkey and perhaps pumpkin pie. On Tuesday we will continue talking about mechanical energy and mechanical power models for estimating mechanical work. Be sure to look carefully at the Robertson & Winter (1980) paper, as it thoroughly explains the mechanical power method. We will also be looking at an extension of this method through the Caldwell & Forrester (1992) paper.

On the website I posted the Answer Key to Assignment 6, AND the newly minted Assignment 7.  Assignment 7 is the third in the series of joint moment calculations, with this version incorporating Ground Reaction Forces in the foot model…. again this is an extension of the last assignment, so you should be getting the hang of these calculations by now. Assignment 7 will be due in class on the Tuesday AFTER Thanksgiving, but if you wish you can do it this weekend and get it out of the way.

Slides & Notes Posted Wednesday November 19

As promised, the notes and slides for the next section (Energy, Power & Work) have been posted to the Kin 530 website. We will begin this section tomorrow…… as noted in the post from last weekend, you should read Chapter 6 in the Robertson textbook, the Robertson & Winter (1980) paper and the Caldwell & Forrester (1992) paper.

3D Kinetics Chapter in Robertson textbook

While reviewing my notes today, I realized that I had failed to mention the 3D Kinetics chapter in the Robertson textbook (Chapter 7, pages 145 to 160). This is a good complement to both Brian’s lecture material on 3D kinetics, and to the Schache & Baker (2007) paper.

Friday November 14

Hi Kin 530,

As we mentioned in class yesterday, next week will see the end of Kinetics and the beginning of Energy, Work & Power. For Tuesday and the final installment of Kinetics, please read Schache & Baker (2007), and complete Assignment 6. Although this seems like a fast turnaround for Assignment 6, you will see that it is very similar to the last assignment, except that now your calculations will include inertial terms because the conditions are dynamic. Hence much of the residual brainpower still left from last week will carry over nicely this week. I have also posted the Answer Key for Assignment 5 so you can be sure you used the correct approach for the static problem from last week.

On Thursday we will start Energy, Work & Power, so please read Chapter 6 of the Robertson textbook, pages 125 to 144. I have also posted two readings on the website: Robertson & Winter (1980) and Caldwell & Forrester (1992). The first of these is a classic, a heavily cited paper that was the springboard for much heavy thought during the 1980’s and 1990’s. My suggestion would be to read the text chapter first, followed in order by R&W (1980) and then C&F (1992).  I will post slides and notes for Energy, Work and Power next week.
