Kin 535 Tuesday April 24 Update

Hi Kin 535,

As promised I added to the website the LAST set of slides for the semester, covering the Huxley muscle model and muscle force tension transients. The readings for this section are two chapters from Tom McMahon’s excellent 1984 book:

Other Muscle Modeling

McMahon (1984) Chapter 4 pp 85 – 103

McMahon (1984) Chapter 5 pp 115 – 125

Read the Chapter 4 pages for Thursday, and the Chapter 5 pages over the weekend.

Friday April 13th is a Lucky day?

Hi Kin 535,

The section concerning time-dependent effects of contractile history on the CC’s ability to produce force got off to an excellent start yesterday, IMHO.  For the weekend (OK, before the next class which is Thursday of next week, April 19), you should read the latter 2 papers in the section on the Reading Materials page of the website titled Force Enhancement:

Chapman et al., 1985

van Ingen Schenau et al., 1997

The lucky part of Friday the 13th? Well, it is a beauty day outside, the start of a long weekend, and those who needed extra time on Lab 2 have until Tuesday to put your lab in my mailbox in the Kinesiology main office, Totman 110. As an added bonus of luckiness, I just posted the 3rd and final MusMod2006 lab, in which you can  compare concentric force production initiated either from rest or with a prior eccentric stretching phase. This comparison in lab 3 is a linear version of the Chapman et al (1985) experiment, so reading that paper first will help when doing the MusMod2006 lab.

Have a great weekend, see you in class next week…… Dr. C.

Wednesday April 11 Update

Hi Kin 535,

Tomorrow we will start a section concerning time-dependent effects of contractile history on the CC’s ability to produce force. There is a section on the Reading Materials page of the website that is titled Force Enhancement, and you should read the first 2 papers in the section for Thursday:

Edman et al., 1978

Cavagna, Dusman & Margaria, 1968

I’ll post the slides later today.  See you in class…… Dr. C.

Thursday, April 5 Update

Kin 535,

Well, hopefully after today’s lecture, the Hof et al. (2002) paper makes more sense.

Tuesday, we will start a section on examining muscle properties and estimating muscle model parameters in humans. Read the Hasson et al. 2011 and Hasson & Caldwell, 2012 papers, and you will find the slides for this section posted as of today.

Remember, the due date for the 2nd computer MusMod2006 lab is next Thursday, April 12, which seems to be a week from today.

Thanks, have a great weekend.     …….. Dr. C.
