Amalia Gnanadesikan, UMass PhD 1997, and technical director for Language Analysis at the University of Maryland Center for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), has just published a grammar of Dhivehi, an understudied language spoken in the Maldives. Amalia says: “Although the Maldives is in a relatively isolated area, over the centuries it has been a linguistic crossroads, so Dhivehi combines elements originating in both northern and southern India with influences from Persian and Arabic and, more recently, English”.
