Three current or former UMass linguists were invited speakers at Syncart 1: From Maps to Principles: Syntactic Cartography and Locality in July. Lisa Selkirk talked about Structure Sensitivity in Bantu Sentence Tonology, Gennaro Chierchia (Harvard University, 1984 UMass PhD) gave an evening lecture on Weak Crossover, I gave an individual talk on Evidential Moods, Speech Reports, and the Left Periphery, and Lisa Selkirk and I also gave a joint talk on FoCus and Given: Two Distinct Technologies for Discourse Coherence. The conference took place in four different cities in Tuscany: Chiusi (base camp), Pienza, Siena, and Montepulciano. The final talk was in the Palazzo Vecchio of Montepulciano and was preceded by a welcome from the mayor.
