Suzi Lima (University of Toronto & Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, 2014 UMass PhD) gave a series of three invited talks on counting and measuring at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (Germany) this summer. Suzi’s work integrates theoretical and experimental research, and she has been a pioneer in developing experimental methods for fieldwork. Suzi investigates Brazilian Portuguese and Brazilian indigenous languages, in particular Yudja (Juruna family) and Kawaiwete (Tupi-Guaraní), two highly endangered and understudied indigenous languages of Brazil. Suzi’s talks in Düsseldorf addressed the semantics of container phrases, the acquisition of numerals, and the interpretation of object nouns in Yudja. One of the talks was part of the 2016 Countability Workshop in Schloss Mickeln, the guest house and conference center of the Heinrich Heine University.
Suzi is currently on leave from her position in Rio after starting as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Toronto this summer.
