Departmental electives (5 courses):
Five additional courses are required. Any linguistics class can be an elective, although no more than one 100-level class can be so used. You also do not have to take any 100-level classes! (the Academic Requirements Report sometimes confuses people about this).
Students may select up to two electives from certain related departments (e.g., Anthropology, Computer Science, Communication Disorders, Legal Studies, Philosophy, Psychology) to count for this requirement. Consult with your advisor.
Integrative Experience (IE) requirement:
Take one of the following Linguistics IE courses. Note that your IE course also counts as an elective or cross-linguistic requirement course (389 and 404 can count as cross-linguistic courses, all of them can count as linguistics electives).
- LINGUIST 389, 394BIE, 404, 412
Junior Year Writing (JYW) requirement:
The Junior Year Writing (JYW) requirement is met by taking LINGUIST 305 or LINGUIST 350. The Junior Year Writing requirement does not need to be satisfied in your junior year. LINGUIST 305 and 350 also count as linguistics electives.
Common requirements for all majors:
A grade of C or better must be earned in any course used to satisfy major requirements.
College of Humanities and Fine Arts requirement:
- Foreign Language: All students must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language at the intermediate level.
University Graduation requirements:
See the New Student Orientation and Transition’s Requirements page for more details about University graduation requirements, including General Education requirements. You must accumulate at least 120 credits/units to graduate.
