Reading assignment 2

Due Friday Nov. 15th at midnight. Worth 10 percent of your final grade.

1. Read chapter 4 of “World Englishes”, available on the password protected readings page.

2. Choose 3 varieties of English that are discussed in the reading (i.e. for which transcriptions of the “Lexical set” are provided). At least one variety must come from the UK, at most one must must come from North America, and at least one must come from some other region of the world.

3. For each variety, choose 2 distinctive features that are discussed in the reading. These can be vowel pronunciations for individual words in the lexical set, or some other aspect of the phonology.

4. Find a native speaker of the variety (usually on the internet), and for each of the distinctive features you have chosen, find (or record) at least one example that should show whether or not the speaker has the pronunciation that World Englishes provides. Provide a link to the example as part of your write-up.

5. Write this up as a short blog piece on phonological differences between varieties of English (500 – 650 words). Cite the chapter as follows:

Gunner  Melchers  and  Philip  Shaw.  2003.  Chapter 4 of World  Englishes:  An  Introduction.  Arnold.

6. Submit your blog page link on this form by midnight, Friday November 15th.

7. As last time, we will be looking for a well written piece. We will also be looking for accurate descriptions of the sounds at issue, and evidence that you have understood the reading.

“Clear writing, free of spelling or grammatical errors. No overly colloquial writing, but also no use of “flowery” vocabulary just to impress, or as filler. Clear concise writing will be especially important given the short length, which you must not exceed (points will be deducted).”
