Requirements

Participants will be required to:

1. Read everything in advance of the indicated class,  and post comments or questions on at least *5* of the readings by the end of the day Sunday in the week before the class.

2. Participate in class discussion, and post at least *3* follow up comments or questions.

3. Present a paper to the class. This will be a 20 minute presentation, and you should not try to present the whole paper. Rather, you should pick out one or two of the most important points and discuss them. You should also discuss one strength and one weakness of the paper. I would like you to find a paper yourself to present that relates to our course – start thinking about this right away. Look at the references in the papers, google, etc…

4. Complete problem sets before the class in which they are due.

5. Submit a one-page maximum plan for your term paper on March 27th.The usual topic for the term paper is a new analysis of some set of data that has been analyzed in a previous framework. Good sources for such data include back copies of areal journals, like the Journal of African Languages and Linguistics, older conference proceedings (see the Node), and of course grammars. Other possibilities for the term paper include a theoretical proposal, or a pilot experiment.I would like you to come talk to me about possible paper topics in the first two weeks of March.

6. Present term paper results in the last two classes, and submit the final paper by May 8.
