Bringing Limnogeology to the Classroom

Because lakes are common across parts of the US, this website provides resources for teachers to use that incorporates Earth science with the “common core”.    Lake sediments provide critical information about environmental and climate change and this can be documented in your backyard and in your communities.  We invite teachers to learn how to build their own inexpensive hand-held coring equipment with their classes and take sediment cores in their own surroundings. Observing and measuring proxies like pollen, diatoms, and sedimentology will increase student appreciation for concepnsflogots of environmental time delays, causality at a distance, cyclic causality and the recent geologic record.

This project represents the broader impacts of the Lake El’gygytgyn Drilling program at UMass, funded generously by the U. S. National Science Foundation (Award #EAR 1204087) .
