The following are examples of acceptable reasons for missing an exam or scheduled makeup exam:
Conflicting exam
Should you have a semester exam in another course scheduled at the same time as a Math131 exam, you need to visit the Registrar’s Office in the Whitmore Building and they will resolve the conflict for you. They will compare the 5-digit Spire class numbers of the two courses to determine which is obliged to give a make-up. If the final digit(s) of the 5-digit class number for your Math 131 section is higher than the final digit(s) of the 5-digit class number for the other course, you are entitled to a make-up exam in Math 131. If the registrar determines that you need to reschedule your Math131 exam, you will need to give your instructor: your full name, student ID number, your section number, email address, and the documentation from the Registrar’s Office at least two weeks in advance of the exam.
Note: When the final exam schedule comes out, if you find you have another final exam scheduled for the same time as ours, or if you have three final exams scheduled for the same day, then you should see someone in the Registrar’s Office to resolve these issues.
Conflicting class
Should you have an evening class scheduled at the same time as a Math131 exam, you need to visit the Registrar’s Office in the Whitmore Building and they will resolve the conflict for you.
Your makeup request may be granted if:
- the conflicting class meets only once a week, between 7 and 9 p.m.; and
- it is the lecture or primary enrollment portion of the course; and
- your absence from the class “will significantly impact the course”.
If the registrar determines that you need to reschedule your Math131 exam, you will need to give your instructor: your full name, student ID number, your section number, email address, and the documentation from the Registrar’s Office at least two weeks in advance of the exam.
Official university travel
If you will be traveling for university business (e.g. athletic competition or an academic conference), then you will need to give your instructor: your full name, student ID number, your section number, email address, and official documentation supporting the absence at least two weeks in advance of the exam.
Medical reasons
Absence from an exam due to medical reasons can be planned or unexpected. If planned, you need to notify your instructor at least two weeks in advance of the exam. If unexpected, you will need to contact your instructor within 48 of the missed exam unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances. In either case, you will need to give your instructor: your full name, student ID number, your section number, email address, and documentation from a medical professional, with a telephone number where the professional can be contacted if necessary. You need not disclose any details of the reason for a medical excuse, but there must be enough information to allow the absence to be excused. Students are encouraged to use there best judgement regarding illness. Please visit UHS to obtain documentation if you are sick on the day of an exam.
Religious observances
State law and University regulations require that a student be excused from academic pursuits on days of religious observance. The regulations also require the student to notify the instructor, in writing, at least two weeks before the absence or it may not be excused. The University provides a list of major observances here
Any extenuating circumstances outside of the regularly scheduled exam must be presented at least 2 weeks before the exam or they will not be accepted barring unforeseen emergencies.
Once an exam is taken, we do not offer retakes for exams.
If you are away from campus for an extended period of time with a documented reason, but have completed at least 50% of the course material, and are passing the course, you may discuss the possibility of an INCOMPLETE with your instructor if you cannot complete the work in the remainder of the semester.
Final exam: There are no early final exams for any reason. Therefor you should not make any travel plans before you know your exam schedule. In the case of conflicts the makeup final is scheduled after the regularly scheduled final exam.
