Abstract: The Sandtronix Sanding Robot aims to automatically sand rough timber by mounting an electric hand sander attached to an automatically moving carriage to a wood beam. This automatic functionality aims to free up labor time for industry professionals and hobbyists alike. Existing methods and machinery require either extensive labor or extremely large machinery. The focus of this project is to create a new version of the existing Sandtronix prototype which addresses the main issue of previous prototypes: inability to safely move the sander to the edges of the beams. The team’s solution was to attach a robotic arm equipped with a capacitive sensor to hold the sander to the moving carriage.
