Abstract: Electric scooters have become a very popular mode of transportation on campus, but there is a lack of knowledge on the behavior of riders and surrounding vehicles, as well as overall safety compared to other transportation. However, there are no existing VR e-scooter simulators currently available for purchase. This project offers a method for gathering more information on the human factors and safety associated with these scooters, learning more about riders’ habits and interactions with their surroundings. Team #1408’s goal for this project is to contribute to the design of a VR e- scooter simulator to allow Professor Anuj Pradhan to study rider habits in the Human Performance Laboratory by collecting and integrating the user input data of an electric scooter. Our contributions would allow for the measurement of a rider’s acceleration, braking, and steering to be collected and then be integrated into a virtual reality environment for the user to experience in real time in a safe and controlled setting.
