Abstract:
The UMass Minutemen Racing Team requires a customizable steering rack design that is cost-effective and allows the team to steer the vehicle with the team’s driver requirements and track maneuverability metrics defined by the FSAE competition. Our project covers the development of a feasible steering rack and included 3D-printed fabrication of a model steering system, which includes a rack, pinion, and housing assembly. Design optimization was achieved through a MATLAB script that includes calculations necessary to develop the rack and pinion steering system for variable inputs. The design process utilizes this script to decide key geometry factors that influence the vehicle’s steering. We are looking forward to the use of our steering rack in the 2023 FSAE competition, the first for the Minuteman Racing team.
