Team 1507: Push Beauty, Spring 2022

Abstract:
Our design project is sponsored by Push Beauty, a company that strives for making makeup products inclusive for people with disabilities and limited motor skills. Our group was tasked with designing a makeup canister that has the ability to be operated with only one hand. Traditional makeup canisters are not inclusive for those with disabilities as it most commonly has a cap that requires it to be pulled from a base, as well as a twisting motion that is used to bring the makeup product out of the canister for application. Both of these important functions on the canister require the use of two hands for operation. It is important that a makeup canister is designed for people with disabilities in mind because the main goal behind makeup is to promote confidence in one’s beauty, and for many people this is not achieved because of the difficulties in applying the product. Creating a canister that has the ability to be used by anyone regardless of the disability allows for the user’s confidence to shine through when applying their makeup. There are not many inclusive makeup canisters on the market today because the problem is often overlooked and companies do not want to stray away from traditional canister design. Our team’s solution to this problem in the makeup industry is a design that prioritizes feasibility in functionality while remaining sturdy and stable in the hand. The cover of the canister will have a slight angle under the cover where someone can slide a thumb or finger under it to pop the cap open, to gain access to the make product. Instead of the traditional twisting motion to move the product up within the canister to be applied, we replaced it with a slider and elevator functionality. The user would be able to place a thumb or finger on the pin of the canister and move it up or down to apply the makeup or put the product back in the canister. To appeal to the users who are able bodied we added the ability for this canister to be reusable and the capability to hold different makeup products as long as they are in the cream stick consistency. By creating this makeup canister and having users with disabilities and limited motor skills in mind, we are helping to make the makeup industry more inclusive for all users.
