FINAL

100 possible, AVG (58) sd(17) High (85) low (20)

Overall a very good showing on the final!  The final exam response sheet is here (you can see the correct answers on the top line):

The final exam had two problems that caused difficulty for many of you. Neither was intended as a tricky problem, but they drew from older course material. These problems were: the I-F bond energy, and the # of isomers for the Ru complex).  The I-F bond energy problem is a Born-Haber cycle.  You can partially reason through the problem by noting that polar bonds are stronger than non-polar bonds.  The Ru isomers problem is solvable by systematically working through by the ‘trans ligands’ book-keeping approach; and remembering that “en” is ethylenediamine.

The responses to question 21 tell me that I should add some bio-inorganic chemistry to the course next year (34% picked that option).  I’ll probably use that as an avenue to teach reaction mechanisms, and drop the textbook chapter.

Exam 3: Dec 3

100 possible, (95 high, 5 low) avg = 61, SD = 20

Exam Scores here:   Exam3_gradebook

As previously, I generally place the lowest B- as about AVG –  1/3SD.  If the grade were determined by this individual examination, I would use these cutoffs:

A- (74); B- (54); C- (34); D- (14); F (<14).

So how many students scored in these grade-bins?  A(16), B (18), C(12), D(4), F(1) non-takers (about 5!  living dangerously…)

Exam II: October 28

100 possible, (100 high, 19 low) avg = 67, SD = 20
The exam was pretty reasonable statistically, but possibly bi-modal.  Perhaps the class is partitioning into two populations, each with distinct averages…

Although I set the grades by the points-total at the end of the semester, if I had to assign letter grades they are below (lowest score for the letter).
A- (> 80); B- (>60); C- (> 41); D- (> 21); F (<21)

Since this is an upper-division majors-dominated course, I generally take the lowest B- = Avg – (1/3)SD.  This is approximate, but a really good starting point.  So how many people had scores in each speculative letter-grade bin?  Here goes: A (17); B (18); C (15); D (4); F (1).

Exam 1: October 3
100 possible, (90 high, 17 low) avg = 65, SD = 16
The exam was more challenging than expected, as my exams often have an average score ~71.
