Overview
This course will give you phonetics knowledge in order to master pronunciation correctly.
We will go over the articulation properties of French (phonétique articulatoire), especially detailing how consonants and vowels are articulated and how they are different from English ones.
We will then spend time on how sounds interact with each other: what we see is not what we hear. Written forms are not the same as spoken ones “le médecin est venu hier” is actually pronounced [lFmètsCévnuiJèR] or close. We will study how consonants and vowels are not pronounced, how to recognized the relevant environments and the rules that determine the structure of the language. The goal is to provide you with tools to recognize when those rules apply.
Mid-semester you will start working on theater plays (of your choice) to practice and get better at pronunciation. Take a look at the library and find a 10-15 lines (150 words or so) text in Racine, Corneille, Ionesco, Beaumarchais, Molière, etc.
Tests of production or discrimination will be realized every month or so, and the 4th test will consist of you reading (declamer) the part of the play you chose.
The mid-term and the final will consist of questions about the content of the course.
Material
I will give you weekly readings in French about Phonetics.
I will make pronunciation exercises available with samples in order for you to practice. We will be using PRAAT (http://www.fon.hum.uva.nl/praat/) or a recording interface for exercises.
