Masters Track

Admission Requirements 

Accelerated (“4+1”) M.S. program

Undergraduate students from UMass Amherst and the Five College Consortium are eligible to pursue the 4+1 (i.e., typically one additional year of course work study beyond the B.S. degree) or accelerated M.S. program. Students are eligible for admission if they meet the following requirements: 

  • A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for admission to the 4+1 program. A student with a GPA of 3.5 will qualify automatically for admission without the need of letters of recommendation. A student with a GPA between 3.0-3.5 will need to submit at least one letter of recommendation from an MSE-affiliated faculty member. 
  • The applicant is expected to have received education and training in a STEM field at UMass Amherst, i.e., in any of the Engineering departments, Chemistry, or Physics. Requests for admission from students from outside of these disciplines will be considered on a case-by-case basis and will require a letter of recommendation from an MSE-affiliated faculty member
  • Evidence that an applicant is capable of doing outstanding graduate work in the areas encompassed by the MSE program 

Deadlines: Oct. 1 and Apr. 15 for admission to the Spring and Summer/Fall semesters, respectively.

M.S. Program

Students applying for the M.S. program should declare their interest in a non-thesis (coursework only) or M.S. with thesis option, at the time of admission, and are expected to meet the following requirements: 

  • A GPA of at least 3.0 or its equivalent for undergraduate study  
  • The applicant is expected to have received education and training in some aspects of materials science and engineering or a closely related STEM field 
  • The GRE is recommended but optional 
  • Evidence that an applicant is capable of doing outstanding graduate work in the areas encompassed by the MSE program 
  • International students are required to satisfy the English Language Proficiency Requirements, as specified by the UMass Graduate School 

Deadlines:

Non-thesis option: Oct. 1 and Apr. 15 for admission to the Spring and Summer/Fall semesters, respectively.

Thesis option: Oct. 1 and Jan. 1 for admission to the Spring and Summer/Fall semesters, respectively.
