Community Advisory Boards (CABs): This project will formulate and receive guidance from the CABs. The CABs in both Mekoryuk and Kongiganak will help to guide the community engagement, knowledge co-production, and several areas of the overall research activities. CABs will also serve to evaluate the research activities and whether they remain consistent with the research initiatives identified by the communities in this proposal. The CABs (one for each community) will be made up of a total of six participating members. They will be chaired by Weston (Mekoryuk) and Lewis (Kongiganak) and also include community elders and the local CRP. Remaining seats will be set aside for community leaders (e.g. representatives from city government and school staff) and other residents to be appointed by Weston and Lewis. The CABs will meet quarterly and upon request with one of the meetings held annually in conjunction with the Alaska Tribal Conference on Environmental Management (ATCEM) conference. To compensate board members, a per meeting honorarium will be paid. Other Steering Committee members will regularly participate in the CAB meetings.

Community Research Partners (CRPs): The project will financially support CRP in each community for the duration of this project. CRPs will be overseen by Temte, Weston, and Lewis. CRPs will assist with gathering data, including maintaining and operating monitoring sites and instruments, collecting water and environmental samples, communicating with community members and leaders, and helping to coordinate research and engagement activities. CRPs will have an opportunity to serve on the CABs and play a local leadership role in the field research and monitoring activities. CRPs will receive comprehensive training in research methods, for data collection and analysis by visiting investigators. Training will be conducted virtually, in the host communities during seasonal site visits, and during the annual Anchorage workshop associated with ATCEM. CRPs will participate in the codevelopment of the Observation Plan which will provide the workflow that will be applied to the monitoring tasks.
