TF APPLICATION              MTF APPLICATION

S2TLC is seeking

  • 8 pre-service secondary mathematics teacher candidates AND
  • 8 highly qualified secondary  mathematics teachers committed to mentoring novice teachers into problem-based, inquiry learning and reflective practices

to join the S2TLC Project for 2017-2018.

Review of applications will begin May 1, but applications will continue to be accepted until all positions are filled.

Prospective pre-service teachers must have strong mathematics backgrounds (undergraduate degree or equivalent in mathematics–sometimes physics, engineering, and computer science undergrads meet requirements) with interest in teaching mathematics in high need* schools. If selected for this project and accepted to the Umass Graduate School, these “Teaching Fellows (TFs)” will participate in a funded year-long intensive Master’s degree and initial licensure program. TFs will be matched with a mentor teacher and will work side-by-side with that teacher for a full school year in an apprenticeship model while completing 36 graduate credit hours of coursework. Coursework begins Summer 2017 and ends when the secondary school year ends in June 2018.

Prospective Mentor Teachers must have professional license to teach grades 8-12 mathematics in a high need* western Massachusetts school district. Ideally the project would like two mentors from the same school, although this is not required. Mentor Teaching Fellows (MTFs) will take three project funded graduate courses (total 9 credits) along with their TF (1 summer 2017, 1 fall 2017, 1 spring 2018) and serve as mentor to a TF for the entire 2017-2018 school year. MTFs will receive $5,000  for successful completion of the coursework, mentoring, and related project activities at the end of the school year.

*High needs schools are designated as those within a district that serves an elementary or secondary school that meets one or more of the following criteria: 1) A high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line; 2) A high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which the teachers were trained to teach; or 3) A high teacher turnover rate.
If in doubt about whether your school qualifies as high need, check with S2TLC Project Office: michelec@umass.edu

TFs and MTFs will be welcomed into the vibrant S2TLC community of STEM teachers in western Massachusetts to share professional practices, reflect on issues of practice, and generally work collaboratively to improve students’ opportunity to engage with STEM. We value face-to-face as well as virtual communities of practice and encourage Fellows to expand their Professional Learning Network (PLN). All Fellows must complete project evaluation requirements and may be invited to participate in associated research studies.
