Description: This demonstration shows the interaction of current passing through parallel wires.
The wires will pinch (parallel current), while the tin foil will spread apart (anti parallel current).
Equipment:
- VariAC
- Large transformer
- 2 Thick cables
- Pinching wire apparatus
- Tin Foil apparatus
- S clamp
- Table Clamp
- Long pole
- VariAC to banana plug cable
Setup Procedure:
- Connect the two thick wires to the transformer.
- Connect the other ends of the thick wires to the pinching wire apparatus.
- Connect the transformer to the VariAC.
- Connect the tin foil apparatus as shown in the picture.
- Test to make sure each apparatus is working correctly.
Demonstration Procedure:
Pinching Wires:
- With the pinching wire apparatus connected, turn on the VariAC.
- Note that the wires pinch together, due to the collective magnetic fields produced by the current carrying wires.
Tin Foil:
- Connect the two cables to each small pole touching the tin foil as shown in the second picture.
- Turn on the VariAC. Note that the wires push apart due to the antiparallel magnetic fields.
- When finished, turn off the VariAC.
Caution: Do not touch the transformer when the power is on.
